The Otumfuo Teachers Awards was instituted by the Charity Foundation under the selfless idealism of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in 2011 to support Education in Ghana. The 4th Teachers Awards was held on the 8th of May, 2014 at a traditional grand durbar of Chiefs and people from all walks of life at the Manhyia Palace. The criteria for selection of awardees differ each year per the decision of the patron and the planning committee.
Beneficiaries were honored by a Royal Handshake (Mo ne ye) from His Royal Majesty, as well as assorted items which are very useful for rural living as determined by the planning committee. In addition, each awardee received a certificate of recognition of good services to mother Ghana. The Awardees had the opportunity to dine and wine with His Royal Majesty and elders in his Palace. One distinct feature of the awards is that all awardees are accorded the same status and recognition (no best teachers). A total of 560 teachers from deprived communities in Ghana have been beneficiaries of this award system since its inception in 2011.
The 4th Otumfuo Teachers Awards aimed at recognizing and rewarding head teachers with dedicated service to education in deprived areas. The Objectives of the foundation in organizing the award ceremony included the identification of eligible hard working head teachers from deprived areas, to select 100 beneficiaries for the awards, to mobilize funds and award materials and holding the Awards on the 8th day of May 2014.
